The Baron's Christmas Message - 2010

In the year my grandparents were born, radio communication was barely out of its infancy; there was no television; civil aviation had hardly started and space satellites were still in the realm of science fiction. When they drove down to San Pedro to see me for the first time after my birth, it took nearly two days by car to get there. In contrast, this last October, when I flew from Sacramento to Los Angeles for my Mexican cruise vacation, it took just one hour.

Travel, communication and technology have entered entirely new dimensions.

In Los Angeles, while visiting with a good friend of mine prior to the cruise, I went to see the many interesting sights in and around Los Angeles, including the exhibits at the Getty Villa.

One of the tasks of that museum, or indeed any museum, is to not just show us they way things were, but to help us reflect on how much they have changed. To see not only where we came from and how far we’ve gone, but to help us imagine what we can still hope to accomplish.

In particular, I have been reflecting of late on advances in the area of communications and computers, particularly in the arena of social networking. All this astonishing and very rapid development has changed the lives of almost everyone. Leaders and specialists can meet and discuss political and technical problems; news travels faster and there is more of it; new opportunities for world trade and commerce have been opened up by this communication revolution; perhaps more important, modern technology has touched most aspects of life throughout the world.

But in spite of all the progress that has been made, the greatest problem in the world today remains the gap between rich and poor countries and we shall not begin to close this gap until we hear less about nationalism and more about interdependence, less about real or imagined slights and insults and more in the way of cooperation and consideration.

The keyword for world peace should be, first and foremost, cooperation.

With social networking sights like MySpace, Twitter, and FaceBook, there is a flow of information in all directions, with Canadians helping in the Caribbean, Indians in Africa, New Zealanders in India, Australians in Papua New Guinea, British in Kenya, and Americans just about everywhere. The list is endless. The web of contacts provided by the Internet is an intricate pattern based on self help and cooperation.

Yet in spite of these advances the age old problems of human communication are still with us. We have the means of sending and receiving messages, we can travel to meetings in distant parts of the world, we can exchange experts; but we still have difficulty in finding the right messages to send, we can still ignore the messages we don't like to hear and we can still talk in riddles and listen without trying to comprehend.

Perhaps even more serious is the risk that this mastery of technology may blind us to the more fundamental needs of people. Electronics cannot create comradeship; computers cannot generate compassion; satellites cannot send serenity; and cell phones cannot text tolerance.

And no amount of technology could have engineered the esprit de corps and sense of joy that was so evident in my work with the Stockton Civic Theatre this last year.

It is friendly and understanding communication that makes such happiness possible.

I hope that Christmas will remind us all that it is not how we communicate but what we communicate with each other that really matters.

Let us therefore make the most of it; let us all resolve to communicate as friends in tolerance and understanding. Only then can we make the message of the angels come true: 'Peace on earth, goodwill towards all'.

I always look forward to being able to talk to everyone at Christmas time and at the end of another year I again send you all my warmest greetings.

Happy Halloween From the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch

Considering we haven't even tried carving a pumpkin into a Jack-O-Lantern in nearly 30 years (an accomplishment in and of itself since we're only 29), we don't think we did to bad of a job.

Happy Halloween from the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch.

In Memorium of A Great Tragedy

Today marks the ninth anniversary of the Terrorist attacks of 9/11. Nine years ago today, a group of misguided men changed the world forever, and the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch honors the memory of all who lost their lives that day.

Protect A Book Day

It is my pleasure to announce the first official holiday in the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch;

"Protect A Book Day"

Whether it's a Qur'an, a Bible, a Torah, or whatever book you feel might be threatened, go to your nearest bookstore or public library and buy or borrow a copy of that book. Keep it safe from those who would destroy it, and better yet, read the book as well.

We must show those who would destroy knowledge (Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao Zedong, Terry Jones, etc., etc.) that the accumulated wisdom in the worlds truly great books is stronger than they are.

Condemnation of Intolerance

It is found by the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch that the planned burning of copies of the Muslim Holy Qur'an, that the evangelical, fundamentalist Christian church led by the reverend Terry Jones, in Gainesville, Florida to be an act of hate and terror that serves no truly useful purpose.

It is also found that the logic behind the book burning to be flawed on a very key point. Reverend Jones claims that the act is a protest against Islamic Extremists for the events of September 11th, 2001. Very well, but if Christian Extremists bomb a family planning clinic, will they object to pro-choice groups burning bibles in protest for that action? I think not.

If a bully kicks sand in your face, will kicking even more sand in his face make him stop, or simply make him kick even more sand back again?

In other words "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, would leave the whole world blind and toothless".

The Barony's Stance Against Terror

I have just read on the official website for South Park Studios that the infamous episode "201", which was censored into oblivion and altered to the point that Messrs. Matt Stone and Trey Parker felt compelled to remove it from broadcast on Comedy Central, it will, on May 22, 2010 be available on streaming video at the official website.

This episode was pulled because of threats of violence from a radical Islamic terrorist group, Revolution Muslim who objected to a cartoon portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch not only condemns terrorist activities of groups like Revolution Muslim, the barony, and I, it's lord, are deeply disappointed that Comedy Central gave into such threats and therefore gave power to such hateful radicals.

I am reminded of attacks by certain pedantic Christian groups that came out against the Harry Potter book series, claiming it taught children Satanism and witchcraft. I was therefor surprised when I learned a Pentecostal friend of mine was a great fan of the series. When I asked her about her denominations stance on the books her response was;

"I have enough faith in the truth that I have no reason to be afraid of a fantasy."
So, I say to Revolution Muslim, if you truly had faith, why would you care about a cartoon, and I say to you, the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch does not fear you, so you have no power over it's baron or his people.

You are nothing, and I will not only be watching the streaming episode come May 22nd, but do in fact encourage all who read this to watch it as well.

A Thought on Freedom

Freedom is an illusion.
People always serve.

If they are weak enough of spirit, they serve only themselves.
If they are strong, they serve the living community of those that they love.

They take hold;
They are the center,
The center of the family,
Be it family of birth or family of choice.

Some will say that this makes life out to sound very hard and unrelenting.

But I say it is true only for empty women and hollow men.

Official Condemnation of Tactless Remarks

Following the recent, tragic events in Haiti, this last Tuesday, certain parties have taken the opportunity to make many cruel, heartless, and extremely thoughtless remarks regarding the earthquake, as well as the nation and people of Haiti, and while the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch, and I it's baron, will not dignify or grant more attention to the two worst perpetrators of such vile slander by naming them or otherwise calling them out, the barony does take the following position;

Isn't it wonderful that we live in a world where every person is not only free to display their stupidity, but can also feel comfortable doing so.

For the People of Haiti

As many of you may have already heard, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a horrific earthquake, registering 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck the nation of Haiti , and while the total number of casualties has yet to be determined, some officials fear the total will exceed 100,000.

That is why I am asking, encouraging, and imploring anyone who may be reading this to contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross. If you cannot donate money, and I do understand that in these stressful economic times how difficult it may be to find the money to just pay your rent and buy food, ask them if you can donate your time and volunteer to do some useful task to assist them in their work.

For those who cannot afford to donate time or money, I ask you to offer up your prayers. Whatever your religion may be, pray for the people of Haiti, pray for an end to their suffering, and for the people who will be going to that poor, unfortunate country seeking to offer aid and comfort to the suffering . Pray that they find the strength to endure all the heartache they will face in the coming months as the people of Haiti work their way through this great tragedy.

Happy New Year for 2010

“The whole life of man is but a point of time; let us enjoy it.”

Plutarch
46 AD – 120 AD

As we look back on the year 2009, with all of the social and political problems, and the worst moments of what some economists, journalist, and politicians have taken to referring as “The Great Recession”, the one thing I believe we should all focus on isn’t the chaotic, the disruptive, the negative or the distressing, but rather everything good that happened in this last year.

The world changed forever on January 20th, 2008, when Mr. Barack Hussein Obama II was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America, and while the ultimate success or failure of his administration will be left for history to decide, Mr. Obama has already established a legacy of change. Now, anyone born in the U.S.A. (as Mr. Obama was, despite the attempts by right wing conservatives and conspiracy theorists do to prove otherwise) can indeed grow up to be president.

On a closer and more personal note, 2009 was a year in which the highs finally outnumbered the lows in both my private and public life. No longer beholden to any toxic and self-seeking persons, time was found at last for more artistic pursuits such as my little performances in the Stockton Civic Theatre’s productions of “Annie Get Your Gun” and “The Producers”, I began looking in to forming an investment club for myself and my friends, and was able to take a wonderful excursion to the Mexican Riviera where I met many wonderful people and saw many fantastic sites.

Most especially, however, 2009 saw the founding of the Sovereign Barony of Nonsuch, and while this fiefdom is still in it’s infancy, I look forward to and welcome all of the challenges of being the head of state for this new micronation.

I wish you all a happy new year. Not just for 2010 but for all the years to come.

His serene & sovereign lordship,
Wesley,
Baron of Nonsuch
